Under direction of Principal Investigator, incumbent provides direct study participant care while assisting with clinical research by performing the following duties. Clinical coordination of research trials including protocol review and management, study participant screening, recruitment, scheduling and data collection/review, study participant education, etc. Assists in determining eligibility for study participants. Assists in obtaining informed consent. Ensures protocol compliance. Maintains research records. Obtains records for adverse effect events and reports to Principal Investigator (PI) and sponsor. Collects and enters data into study database. Coordinates and schedules appointments for research-related tests and procedures.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to study participant assessment, blood draws, specimen collection, medication administration and assisting with medical procedures for research studies. Provides staff education as it relates to the research protocols and coordinates studies sponsored by pharmaceutical companies or federally funded studies.
Explains procedures and treatments to study participant. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques. Prepares equipment and aids Principal Investigator (PI) during treatment and examination of study participant. Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of study participant. Observes study participant, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies Principal Investigator (PI) of study participant's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents. Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of study participant as well as limited cardiac physical examinations. Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol. Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned study participants. Initiates a study participant education plan based on individualized needs, as prescribed by Principal Investigator (PI) including study participant and family instruction. Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities.
Manages and oversees the development of clinical trial protocols and is responsible for the protocol review and approval process to regulatory agencies. Assists with the implementation of study specific procedures, methods, guidelines and tools; participates in the establishment of baseline parameters. Responsible for identifying and reporting and problems and/or issues in order to ensure that all clinical aspects of studies are being carried out in accordance with state and federal regulations, guideline and policies. Manages all on-site files and records, case report forms, and source documents for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance. Ensures appropriate transmission of clinical case data to the data management centers; reviews case report queries and problems, and clarifies and/or obtains changes to data as appropriate. Interviews potential study participant candidates and makes the initial decision for further evaluation. Coordinates and works closely with other research staff to determine specific requirements and qualifications of each research study. Communicates with doctors and other research team members regarding feedback on search status and candidates. Develops appropriate recruiting ads using various sources, including but not limited to newspapers, websites, educational institutions, etc. Reports potentially unsafe conditions. Works well with others. May perform additional duties as required.

Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of California, BSN or equivalent. Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Must possess ability to comply with VA nursing requirements. Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in related field and a least 4 years of related experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
